ATLANTA, GA – Ricardo Michael Dobson, better known by his stage name Mr. Upp, is a Caribbean-American reggae and hip-hop recording artist born in Kingston, Jamaica. His name is a reflection of the type of music he makes and the energy he brings to the stage. It’s a name he first started using in reference to the Jamaican slang term “Upp ‘N Running,” which refers to an upbeat style and energy.
But more than merely a description of his energy and style, Mr. Upp is also a reference to the journey he’s continuing to take as a professional musician – one that started as a custodian sweeping the floors of small-town record studios in his native country.
“I always enjoyed playing music in school as a kid and I thought it was easy,” Mr. Upp said. “But when I went to the studio the first time to record a song, it was nothing like what I thought it would be. I had so much to learn. I couldn’t ride a beat or anything. I realized it wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be. But I was determined to rise up, so I started from the bottom by sweeping and cooking and going to classes. I learned the music industry and eventually became a road manager. And then one day they needed someone to fill some time on stage, so I went up and took the mic and started rapping and people started shouting my name. That first song was called ‘Up,’ and it was a true story of my life to that point. And I knew in that moment that this is what I love and this is what I’ve got to do with my life.”
Eventually Mr. Upp moved to the U.S. so that he could pursue bigger opportunities to fulfill his dream of becoming an internationally recognized musician. Now making his home in Atlanta, Mr. Upp has found success within the industry. He has performed with top international and local artists at engagements such as The Atrium Event Center, Mableton Sport’s Bar, Skunkhouse Radio in Brooklyn, New York, and many more. And now he is proud to launch a new single call “My Time.” Appropriately, the song is an anthem that announces to the world his arrival on the scene.
“It’s about my life story and all that I’ve been through – all the places and faces that I’ve seen – and how those things have brought me to where I am today,” he said. “I’m a reggae artist who can rap and fuses hip-hop. That’s me and my voice and where I’m from, and I bring some of the most creative music you’ll find in this world.”
Mr. Upp said he hopes that song will be the first off a new album that he’s just started working on and which he plans to release in early 2019. Until then, he hopes fans will enjoy this new single and even check out some of his other music – such as the previously released single “Ticket On Top,” which has a heavy Caribbean vibe.
